About the Refugee Council
Today, when more people are displaced by violence and conflict than at any time since 1945, when public and political opinion on refugees is increasingly polarised and when the UK asylum system routinely fails many who seek our protection, the need for the Refugee Council is greater than ever.
Following a strategic review in the early part of 2017 the Refugee Councils ambitious goals for the next four years include expanding our transformative services and making them available to many more people seeking protection, mobilising greater public and civil society support for refugees, promoting refugee voices and boosting the profile of refugee-led organisations across the country, and ensuring that the UK does not shirk its refugee protection obligations.
About the Positions
As it enters a new exciting stage of its development, the Refugee Council is looking for up to three new trustees to join the Board of Trustees.
The Board is particularly keen to find people who can bring insight of refugee issues in the UK, or have senior experience in a service delivery environment. The Board is also keen to ensure that the Board has a good balance of diversity in gender and ethnicity.
Appointments are for an initial term of three years, renewable for up to two further terms of three years.
Remuneration This is a voluntary role and there is no remuneration.
Reasonable expenses incurred in the role will be reimbursed in line with the organisations expenses policy.
Location Meetings are held at the Refugee Councils offices in Stratford, London
Time Commitment There are currently 4 formal Board meetings and 5 meetings of the Resources sub-committee per year. Meetings are held in the afternoon.
Other time commitments will include ongoing liaison with the Chair of the Board, Chief Executive and other senior staff, as well as attendance at other meetings, such as interview panels and events as required.
Main Trustee Duties
Determining the overall direction and development of the Refugee Council through the
formulation and regular review of its strategic aims and plans;
Ensuring effective and efficient governance of the Refugee Council and its resources within
the legal and financial requirements of a UK charitable organisation;
Ensuring that the policies and practices of the Refugee Council are in keeping with its aims;
Dedicating the time required to be an effective trustee, including preparing for meetings,
and contributing to debate at meetings; and
Providing constructive challenge to the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team.
Key Skills and Experience Sought
We are particularly seeking people with one or more of the following skills and experience:
Knowledge of the refugee sector
Insight of the issues facing refugees in the UK
Service delivery management, including tendering
The digital and technology environment
Human resource management
All Trustees will require
A commitment to the Refugee Council, its vision, mission and values
Good independent judgement
Commitment to work effectively as a member of a team
Consensus building skills
Tact and diplomacy
Good communication and interpersonal skills
